State Senator Joel Anderson sent a letter to Governor Brown imploring him not grant this vicious killer parole. Anderson stated, “It is deeply troubling that Van Houten, an individual who is capable of such evil and whose very existence was deemed such a threat to our community that she was sentenced to death, could be paroled. That this brutal killer is even being considered for release is why many Californians support the death penalty in the first place.”

Every year, the Vietnam Veterans of America California State Council (VVA-CSC) honor one elected official with their Legislator of the Year Award. This honor is awarded to a legislator that demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting veterans through legislation. For the year of 2015, the award was given to State Senator Joel Anderson.
